Any self-respecting fan of Cantonese pop music

would be well aware that each year

the world’s largest Cantonese singing competition

is held right here in Guangdong.

It was once known as “King of the Mic”

but these days it has been rebranded

The competition has been staged since 2011, and has long been a ratings hit. A long list of talented singers have taken part in the competition, boosting the careers of many Cantonese artists. But there is only one person who can proudly say that they were the first ever champion of “King of the Mic” and that man is… Feng Bo.

We sat down with Feng Bo for an exclusive interview, discussing his life, career and future hopes. Here is our interview with Cantonese pop’s rising superstar.

You are a famous singer and television host in Guangdong. Has this always been a dream of yours? How does it feel to have achieved it?

Well to be honest with you, I only ever dreamt of being a singer. I never thought about being a TV host, but I guess that is just life, you need to keep an open mind and accept all the challenges that come your way. Have I actually achieved my dream so far? I don’t think so; I still have a long way to go.

You were born and raised in Guangdong, later moving to Canada. What brought you back?

Actually, I was born in a city called Zhanjiang, China. I moved to Canada when I was 17. The reason why I stay in Guangzhou now is because I joined the “King of the Mic” singing competition and won, then I signed my contract. It is as simple as that.

Was being part of the singing competition a nerve-wracking experience for you?

Believe it or not, I still get nervous every time I go on stage. I always think of nervousness as a form of excitement which keeps you energetic, therefore it's not always bad for me.

The show has now been rebranded as “The Voice of Cantonese.” How important do you think the show is to preserving the Cantonese language and promoting Cantonese culture?

I think the show really reminds people of how good Cantonese songs really were. Frankly, Cantonese songs are not as popular now as they were in the 80s or 90s and most people prefer to sing Mandarin songs or in other languages other than Cantonese. So, if we don’t keep doing this show, sooner or later there will be no one singing Cantonese songs anymore.

The media landscape has changed over the years and new media is more influential than ever. How do you make the most of new media to develop your career?

Lol. I’m a lazy person and I’m not good at online stuff. I spend most of my time making music and I always believe good music will be discovered regardless of whether I use new media or not.

You have released many songs. Do you have a personal favorite

(Remix)》(Take Your Broken Heart, Make it into Art)是我最喜歡的一首。

I think 《明日(Remix)》(Tomorrow) is my favorite. It was my first debut single and people loved it. It really gave me courage to write my own songs after that. If people hated it, I might have just stopped right there and asked someone else to do the writing for me.

What do you think the best thing about living in Guangzhou is?

I think the best thing that has happened to me in Guangzhou is that I got to know many kind and talented friends who are all good to me, and, definitely singing songs live to my fans always makes me very happy and grateful.

What can we expect from you in the future?

I would like to make an album that people can listen to it for a long time, for years or even decades. I know it won't be easy but that's the joy of it, isn’t it?
